Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling created history by emerging as the longest-serving Chief Minister. He broke the record set by former West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu who held office for 23 years 4 months 16 days.
Pawan Chamling forayed into politics in 1973. He was elected as MLA for the first time in 1985. In 1993, Mr.Chamling floated a party named Sikkim Democratic Front and became CM in less than an year. He took the oath as CM on December 12th, 1994. Finally, He broke Jyoti Basu's record by holding on to power for 22 years 137 days. Whereas, Gegong Apang (22 years 256 days), Manik Sarkar (20 years 90 days) and Karunanidhi (18 years 293 days) are other longest-serving CMs in the country.
